ESA which stands for examples, statistics and anecdotes are three
procedures to support the topic sentence about which we talked in
previous chapters. Here, the second method to develop a paragraph
and support TS is presented: statistics. By using statistics in your
writing, simply you can persuade the reader to accept your statement
in TS. In the following sentences, statistical language is depicted.
The company has tripled in size. A third of these
jobs are held by women. There was a 10%
increase in house prices. Forty percent of the
marriages end up in divorce. Divorce threatens
almost half of romantic marriages. Four out of ten marriages
are ruined by a bitter separation. A promise was given to double the number of police on duty. |
Note the following paragraph
The term population explosion is usually applied to the rapid growth of people number in the last three centuries. In the 200 years from 1650 to 1850, world population doubled and reached its first billion. In the next 80 years, it doubled again; and by 1975, it had doubled once more to a total of 4 billion. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, it is estimated that it will exceed 6 billion and possibly approach 8 billion unless there is a major reduction in birth rates or a major increase in death rates. To conclude, overgrowth of human population may turn into a serious issue in near future. |
The outline
for the paragraph above is as follows:
TS: population
explosion is rapid growth of people number
Support: 1650 to
1850, world population doubled
Support: 1930, population
doubled again
Support: 1975, yet
another increase
Support: early 21th
century, 6 to 8 billion people
Reworded TS: overgrowth of humans may turn into a serious issue
Another example comes below:
Singapore is too small for the number of cars which move on its roads. Despite the government's policies to reduce the number of cars, there are nearly one million vehicles on Singapore's roads. More than 600,000 of these cars are private and rental cars, including cars used by ride - hailing services such as Grab. Inasmuch as the population of Singapore is less than 6 million, for every six people in this tiny country, there is only one car. Still, it is too many for this miniature land of 728 square kilometers. In brief, Singapore may legislate more restricting rules for car ownership. |
