Physical gestures have different meanings in different cultures. Some years ago, I organized a small group of visiting foreign students to New York for four days of sightseeing by bus. Because these students were rather young, and because New York is such an overwhelming city, I was constantly counting heads by my index finger to be sure we had not lost anyone. One young man became extremely quiet and pensive, and I thought that perhaps he was not enjoying himself. When I asked him what the matter was, he replied, “in my country, we count people with our eyes. We use fingers to count pigs”. In brief, body language can be misleading and embarrassing.

Acquiring English is a cumbersome issue unless you turn it into a recreational activity. Having studied English literature for four years at university, I was almost disappointed as to the speaking skill because I had a lot of hesitation and mistakes whenever I ventured into talking. It was so embarrassing that I made my mind to put English aside after graduation. However, much to my joy and fortune, in my senior year, I received a hard disk full of English movies as my birthday gift from a friend who was in movies. Watching English movies was so pleasant and enjoyable that I watched them day and night for six months. I had watched all the movies when I came to know that movies have revolutionized my speaking skill. My classmates who recalled my sufferings in speaking classes were surprised when I talked back to them so fluently and accurately in our graduation party. In conclusion, English is much easier to learn in fun activities.
