Maps and Locations
Paging

To answer the listening questions about maps:

  1. Predict the answer: is it a building or a park or what?
  2. One mistake is not important: try not to make more mistakes.
  3. Look at two questions at the same time.
  4. The places/ answers are not necessarily close to one another.
  5. Move your finger on the map not to get lost.
  6. The beginning of the story is of vital importance: is it a tour? Is it the campus of a university?
  7. Go through the following words. 
  • Boulevard:
  • Lane: narrow road in the country
  • Route: the way to go, esp. over a long distance
  • Thoroughfare: Wide Street open to other roads
  • Track: a path made by people or animals moving a lot
  • Trail: a rough path through wild country
  • Avenue: Wide Street in a town
  • Drive: short road leading to a house
  • Zebra crossing
  • Pavement: sidewalk
  • Dual carriageway
  • Highway: main road: high road
  • Square 
  • Lights: traffic lights
  • Crossroads: here two roads cross
  • Roundabout: where all the cars go round a circle in the middle of the road
  • Turning = road that goes left or right

     10. Direction words are necessary here

  1. Go straight on at the lights / when you come to the crossroads. 
  2. Take the first turning / road / street on your left / right 
  3. You’ll see / you’ll come to a (bank). Then …
  4. Go on for about (2 minutes / 100 meters)
  5. It’s easier if I can show you on the map
  6.  It’s about five minutes from here.
  7.  It’s about a ten-minute walk.
  8. Don’t take the first road
  9. Go across the roundabout
  10. Turn left / right.

     11. Propositions of direction

  1. Go past = continue past something so that is is now behind you
  2. Go across = cross something, like a road or crossroads
  3. Go along = continue down a road
  4. Go straight on = don’t turn left or right
  5. Go up = walk / drive up a hill
  6. Go down = walk or drive down a hill or a road
  7. Go through = pass through something, such as a tunnel or a town
  8. Go out of = exit (i.e. a railway station)
  9. It’s in front of you = you can see it facing you
  10. It’s opposite the bank = it faces the bank
  11. It’s on the corner = it’s where two roads meet at a 90° angle
  12. Go clockwise/ anti clockwise

    12. Geographical directions: South East West North
