Parts of Speech

In IELTS, the sentences that the examinees write have to be grammatically right. Otherwise,

they will be penalized. That is why Parts of Speech are vital to learn. Every main word is

classified in one of the groups below:

Rules:

1. Nouns come after “the”/”a” and “an”

The erosion of iron happens gradually.

2. Nouns come before “of”

The cultivation of banana started is the pacific.

3. Nouns come after prepositions (on/in/after/under/besides/around/above/against)

I am worried about her mistakes.

5. Nouns come after possessive pronouns. (My/ your/ his/ her)

That is my strength.

6. Nouns come after adjectives (white/black/ fat/ pretty/ wild)

There is a black cat in the room.

7.  Nouns come before verbs as the subject.

People eat at least one meal a day.

7.  Nouns come after verbs as the object.

They study physics.

8. Verbs come after modal verbs. (may / might / can / could / shall / should)

She should hire a painter.

8. Adjectives come before nouns.

She has a pretty baby.

9. Adjectives come after linking verbs (get/ become/ grow/ be/ seem/ look/ appear)

The weather got cold.

10. Adjectives come after adverbs.

They are amazingly beautiful.

11. Adverbs come after verbs at the end of a sentence.

They learn quickly.

12. Adverbs come before adjectives for emphasis.

She is greatly active.

13. Adverbs come before verbs for emphasis.

They are randomly distributed.
