Basic Sentence Patterns

To write in English, you are in need of some well-shaped sentence patterns. In the following,

some of these patterns are presented. Read the structures and examples. Then write your own

sentences. 

1. It + be + adjective + to + verb

a.      It is difficult to ride a horse without prior training.

b.      It is amazing to see a waterfall from above.

c.       It is confusing to read two books at the same time.

2. Subject+ auxiliary +verb + object +adverb of manner+ adverb of place+ adverb of time

a.      Alice can practice English playfully in her room every day.

b.      They may drink wine stealthily in the office at noon.

c.       Humans have developed machines gradually in their life during age

3. Object + be + past participle + by + subject (passive voice)

a.      The house was built by the Germans during WWII

b.      The car was repaired by the mechanic.

c.       The woman was pleased by her romantic husband.

4There + be + plural noun + adverb of place

a.      There are 135 countries all over the world.

b.      There are millions of insects in the forest.

c.       There are 21 ladies in my class.

5. Noun clause + verb

a.      That the earth is round has its own effects.

b.      That she is energetic will make a difference.

c.       That trees are cut is sad.

6. Whether + subject + verb + or not + verb
a.      Whether he will succeed or not changes his future.

b.      Whether people will invade the space or not is a matter of time.

c.       Whether it will rain or not determines the temperature.

4.     7.  The + noun + of + noun + verb 

     a.      The development of Asia occurred long after Europe.

     b.      The destruction of forests will harm the globe.

     c.       The repair of the car will take time.

     8 Verb + ing + object + is/was

     a.      Climbing the  tree is hard

     b.      Seeing a doctor is recommended.

     c.       Washing your hands is mandatory.

     9. Subject + verb + a + adjective + noun

    a.      She smiled a pretty smile.

    b.      They played a wonderful play.

    c.       He cried a bitter cry.

    10Subject + adjective clause + verb

     a.      He who lives in a glass house should not throw stones.

     b.      They who are younger will be employed.

     c.       We who were tired needed rest.
